GTA 6: 7 Things That Make Rockstar's New Game Different

Grand Theft Auto VI isn't just a bigger map with better graphics. Rockstar has rebuilt how the wanted system, combat, and world simulation actually work. Here are the 7 changes that matter most.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, after two delays. Rockstar gave the public its first real look at the game through an Extended Look presentation on August 27, followed by additional gameplay previews at Gamescom. Between those reveals, one thing became clear: this isn't a graphical refresh of the GTA 5 formula. Several of the game's core systems have been rebuilt from the ground up.

Here are seven confirmed changes that separate Grand Theft Auto VI from every game that came before it.

1. Two Protagonists Who Actually Function as a Team

GTA 6 follows Jason and Lucia, and character switching now works on two levels. When the pair are together, players can swap between them instantly, driving as one while the other rides shotgun or provides cover fire. When they're apart, switching triggers a brief transition similar to how GTA 5 handled its three protagonists. This dual-character structure changes how missions can be designed, since Rockstar can build sequences around two characters covering each other in real time, rather than controlling one character while the others sit offscreen.

2. A Relationship System That's an Actual Mechanic

Jason and Lucia's bond isn't just story flavor. Rockstar built a dedicated menu tab that tracks their relationship status, which players can raise through dates, shared activities, small gestures like holding hands, or in-game texting. Romance isn't mandatory. Depending on the choices players make, the relationship can stay platonic instead. It's a genuinely new layer for the series, and it directly affects how story scenes and character interactions unfold over time, giving players a reason to engage with the world beyond chasing money and weapons.

3. A Wanted System That Tracks What You Actually Look Like

The classic GTA 6-star wanted system returns, but how it works has changed significantly. Instead of police simply appearing the moment your star rating climbs, the system now tracks details like your vehicle, appearance, clothing, and last known location. That means changing your outfit, ditching your car, or laying low in a specific area can genuinely help you evade police, rather than just waiting out a timer. This pairs with a new criminal reputation system that tracks how you commit crimes, not just how many. Robbing a store cleanly and escaping without killing anyone builds a professional reputation, while going on a killing spree damages it, sometimes permanently.

4. Combat Built Around Cover, Not Just Aiming

GTA 6's combat system leans heavily on cover-based mechanics. Both protagonists can duck behind furniture, vault over car hoods, and swap shoulders to break an enemy's line of sight. A slow-motion aiming mode lets players target specific body parts, like the head, knees, or an enemy's weapon to disarm them, a system that echoes Red Dead Redemption 2's Dead Eye mechanic more than anything GTA 5 offered. Lucia's hand-to-hand combat includes a counter mechanic for deeper melee options, and enemy AI now uses cover tactically instead of standing in the open. Weapon carrying is also more limited than GTA 5's bottomless weapon wheel; players can hold two rifles and two pistols at once, with extra weapons stored in vehicle trunks or a safehouse.

5. A World That Reacts to You, Not Just Your Actions

GTA 6 borrows a focus interaction system directly inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, triggered by holding a button to engage NPCs and even animals. In one demonstrated sequence, a protagonist approaches a dog and gets options to scold it, pet it, or study it. Rockstar has also confirmed that NPCs will remember player actions over time, and that what your character eats can visibly affect their appearance. Combined with survival elements like fuel and engine-condition meters for vehicles, GTA 6's world is designed to respond to ongoing player behavior, not just reset after every mission the way earlier entries often did.

6. Vehicle Theft That Depends on What You're Stealing

Stealing cars in GTA 6 isn't a single universal animation anymore. Vehicles fall into security tiers, and how you steal one depends on which tier it belongs to. Older cars can be taken with a slim jim or by smashing a window, while modern, high-end vehicles require key-cloners or more advanced tools. Vehicle interiors are also far more detailed, with interactive pedals, adjustable steering wheels, working rearview mirrors, and real-time reflections in car mirrors. Combined with roads that are roughly 15 percent narrower than GTA 5's, the driving experience is built to feel denser and more grounded, not just visually upgraded.

7. A Map Nearly Triple the Size of Rockstar's Last Open World

Rockstar confirmed the GTA 6 map is roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's world, and about double the size of GTA 5's. It centers on the state of Leonida, home to the neon-lit streets of Vice City, but extends far beyond the city into swampland, wilderness, and smaller outlying towns. This isn't just about having more empty space to drive through. The added scale supports the deeper systems above, giving fuel management, wildlife interactions, and regional wanted behavior actual room to matter, rather than being small features tacked onto a familiar-sized map.

GTA 6 Release Date and Price

Grand Theft Auto VI releases November 19, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S at launch. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99, with an Ultimate Edition available for $99.99. The game is digital-only; any physical retail box will contain a download code rather than a disc. GTA 6 is confirmed as a single-player experience, with the next version of GTA Online arriving separately rather than being bundled into this release.
