Apple's first foldable iPhone pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with the A20 Pro chip, a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, and all-day battery life.
Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, the first foldable iPhone. It opens into the largest display Apple has ever put on an iPhone, folds down to a pocketable size, and runs on the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Pre-orders open October 16, 2026, with the device arriving in stores on October 23.
If you've been waiting for Apple's answer to Samsung and other foldable phone makers, here's everything the iPhone Duo brings to the table, and whether it's worth the price.
The standout feature of iPhone Duo is its display. Unfolded, it offers a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display still covers more than 90 percent of the screen area on a standard iPhone 18 Pro, so the phone stays fully usable without opening it.
Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content resizes naturally between the two screens instead of looking stretched or cropped. The inner display uses a custom nano-texture finish to cut down glare, and both panels reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness with ProMotion up to 120Hz.
Apple also addressed one of the most common foldable phone complaints: the crease. The inner display uses optically clear adhesives that let the layers glide as the screen folds, which Apple says keeps the surface flat and minimizes visible creasing over time.
iOS 27 has been rebuilt around the fact that iPhone Duo can be posed in ways no other iPhone can. Split View lets you run two apps side by side on the inner display. You can stand the phone up in a tent shape for hands-free FaceTime calls, or prop it up to watch a show at an angle. Siri AI also gets more room to work with, using the larger canvas for its conversation window.
Apple built iPhone Duo with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, designed to open and close with smooth, balanced resistance over time. Ceramic Shield covers both the front and back of the phone, and the inner display has a scratch-resistant coating layered on top. The phone is also rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, meaning it can handle splashes, dust, and even brief submersion.
Powering the iPhone Duo is the A20 Pro chip, paired with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine designed specifically to handle demanding on-device AI tasks. Apple says the chip delivers up to 20 percent faster CPU performance than the A19 Pro, along with 50 percent more memory bandwidth. A vapor chamber cooling system helps the phone sustain performance during longer gaming sessions or heavy multitasking.
This same chip runs Siri AI, Apple's more conversational AI assistant, which can now hold back-and-forth conversations, pull personal context from your photos and messages, and take actions inside apps like Messages and Reminders.
The iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, made up of a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, along with a 12MP Center Stage front camera and a hidden under-display FaceTime camera. It supports up to 2x optical-quality zoom and 4K video at up to 120 fps.
What makes the camera setup genuinely different is how it uses the foldable design. Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see a live preview on the outer display, so they can adjust their pose before the photo is taken. Smart Take waits until everyone in frame is ready before capturing the shot. Duo FaceTime lets a second person join a call using the outer display, without anyone needing to pass the phone around.
iPhone Duo uses an iPhone-first dual-battery system, paired with an eSIM-only design that frees up internal space for more battery capacity. Apple rates it for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, and up to 44 hours using the outer display alone. Wired charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes, and the phone also supports MagSafe wireless charging.
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model in the US, with pricing rising to roughly $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for the 2TB version. That makes it Apple's most expensive iPhone to date, priced well above the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders open October 16, 2026, at 5:00 a.m. PT, with the phone available in stores starting October 23.
The iPhone Duo makes the most sense for people who are already invested in the Apple ecosystem and want a larger screen for multitasking, content, and creative work, without switching to Android. The price is steep, and the camera system is simpler than the iPhone 18 Pro's, trading a telephoto lens for the folding mechanism. If screen real estate and the novelty of a foldable iPhone matter more to you than having the absolute best camera hardware, iPhone Duo delivers a first-generation foldable that feels genuinely built for daily use rather than as a proof of concept.
