Instagram to Limit Reach of AI Profiles That Skip the Label

Instagram wants to know when the person on a profile isn't real. Accounts that stay quiet about it may lose a major source of new followers.

Instagram has renamed its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile" and attached a penalty to it. Accounts that feature an AI-generated person but skip the label can lose reach, according to an announcement on Instagram's Creators blog in early September 2026.

This article explains who needs the label, what happens without it, and how to fix a restriction.

What Changed on Instagram

Instagram first introduced a voluntary AI creator label in May. The September update changes the name and adds a consequence. Instagram says it heard that people dislike discovering that a profile that looked human was actually AI-generated. In its words, users "want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person."

Profiles that add the label themselves will not see any change in reach. Profiles that Instagram detects as AI-generated and unlabeled may become ineligible for recommendations.

Who Needs the AI-Generated Profile Label?

The rule targets profiles built around a synthetic person. Instagram describes this as a person who was "generated or substantially created with AI."

You Need the Label If

  • Your profile features a virtual influencer or AI-generated persona presented as a person
  • The face and identity users see do not belong to a real human

You Do Not Need the Label If

  • You use AI to edit photos or improve captions
  • You use AI to generate graphics or backgrounds
  • You are a real person who uses AI tools during production

Separate post-level AI labels still exist. The profile label can appear on posts that don't already carry an AI disclosure.

What Happens If You Skip the Label

Instagram says it will notify profiles it detects as unlabeled. Those accounts may lose eligibility for recommendation surfaces such as Reels and Explore, which are the main ways people reach audiences that don't already follow them. Existing followers still see the account. The loss falls on growth, which is exactly what AI influencers need most.

How to Add the Label and Restore Reach

  • Edit your profile and turn on "AI-generated profile."
  • Check Account Status to see whether you're ineligible for recommendations.
  • Review the old label. Creators who used "AI creator" can confirm the new label or remove it if it no longer applies.
  • Appeal if Instagram got it wrong. If you're a real person flagged by mistake, Instagram lets you appeal.

Adding the label is the simplest fix, and Instagram says it restores recommendation eligibility.

How Does Instagram Detect Unlabeled AI Profiles?

Instagram hasn't published how its detection works. Coverage of the announcement describes only that its systems will notify detected accounts. Because detection isn't public, mistakes are possible, which is why the appeal option matters. If you run a human account that uses AI heavily, keep records showing a real person behind it.

What This Means for Creators, Brands, and Followers

AI influencer operators: Disclose. Labeling avoids a reach penalty and builds trust, while hiding the AI identity risks both.

Human creators: You're mostly unaffected. AI-edited photos and captions don't trigger the profile label.

Brands: Check whether an influencer you hire is a real person. A labeled AI profile may be fine for a campaign, but audiences deserve clarity about who is speaking.

Followers: The label gives you a clearer signal about who is behind an account.

Instagram is tying disclosure directly to distribution for the first time. Honest AI profiles keep their reach, and undisclosed ones risk losing it. If your account features an AI-generated person, turn the label on today. If you're a human creator using AI tools, you can keep working as usual.
