Qualcomm Looks Beyond Smartphones to Benefit from the AI Boom

For nearly two decades, Qualcomm's identity has been built on one product category: the Snapdragon chips inside the world's smartphones. That's now changing. Qualcomm is executing one of the biggest strategic pivots in its history, positioning artificial intelligence infrastructure, not mobile handsets, as its next major growth engine.

At its June 2026 investor day in New York, Qualcomm laid out an ambitious roadmap: doubling its non-handset revenue target to $40 billion annually by fiscal 2029, with $15 billion of that coming from an entirely new AI data center business. It's a clear signal that Qualcomm's future growth story extends well beyond the smartphones that made it a household name in the chip industry.

Why Qualcomm Is Diversifying Beyond Smartphones

The smartphone market, while still central to Qualcomm's business, has matured. Global handset growth has flattened in recent years, pushing chipmakers to look elsewhere for expansion. Meanwhile, the AI boom has created enormous demand for compute power across data centers, edge devices, PCs, and vehicle markets where Qualcomm sees an opening to apply its expertise in power-efficient chip design.

As of Qualcomm's fiscal Q2 2026, non-handset revenue already stood at roughly $16 billion of its $44 billion trailing twelve-month sales, with the remaining $27 billion still tied to smartphone chips. Hitting the new $40 billion non-handset target means growing that segment by roughly 150% over the next several years an aggressive but calculated bet on where AI spending is headed next.

Qualcomm's AI Data Center Push

The centerpiece of Qualcomm's new strategy is its entry into AI data center chips, a market long dominated by Nvidia and increasingly contested by AMD. Qualcomm unveiled new AI processors built for hyperscale cloud providers, designed specifically for AI inference workloads with a focus on energy efficiency rather than competing head-on with Nvidia's training-focused GPUs.

Two major partnerships underscore this push. Microsoft and Meta are both expected to deploy Qualcomm's new AI infrastructure chips, with Meta agreeing to use Qualcomm's Dragonfly C1000 data center CPU to power its next-generation data centers starting in the second half of 2028. Qualcomm also announced plans to acquire AI software company Modular in an all-stock deal valued at roughly $3.92 billion, bringing in the Mojo programming language and MAX inference engine to help reduce developer dependence on Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem.

Snapdragon's Role in the AI PC and Edge AI Market

While data centers represent Qualcomm's biggest new bet, the company isn't abandoning device-level AI. Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors continue to power a growing lineup of AI PCs, competing directly against Intel's Core Ultra chips and Apple's M-series silicon. These chips combine Qualcomm's Oryon CPU cores with a dedicated Hexagon NPU, enabling on-device AI features like real-time translation, image generation, and local large language model inference without relying on the cloud.

This edge AI strategy matters because it plays to Qualcomm's traditional strength: building high-performance chips that sip power efficiently, a capability increasingly important as more AI processing shifts from centralized data centers to local devices for speed, privacy, and cost reasons.

Expanding Into Automotive and Industrial AI

Automotive has quietly become one of Qualcomm's fastest-growing segments. The company posted record automotive revenue of $1.33 billion in a recent quarter, driven in part by an expanded partnership with Stellantis covering connected vehicle platforms and advanced driver assistance systems. Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform is positioning the company as a key supplier as vehicles evolve into increasingly sophisticated computing platforms, an opportunity industry analysts expect to grow into a market worth more than $100 billion by 2030.

Can Qualcomm Compete With Nvidia, Intel, and AMD?

Qualcomm's expansion puts it in direct competition with some of the most entrenched players in AI computing. Nvidia remains the dominant force in AI training hardware, while Intel and AMD are both defending their positions in PC and server chips. Qualcomm's advantage lies less in outright performance and more in efficiency and specialization, building chips optimized for inference and edge workloads rather than trying to out-muscle Nvidia's GPU dominance in AI training.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has framed the company's entry as welcomed by cloud and AI customers eager for more competition and alternatives in a market currently constrained by limited supply and high costs. Still, the road ahead isn't without risk. Qualcomm's stock has seen sharp swings alongside its announcements, a reminder of how closely investors are scrutinizing whether these ambitions translate into real market share.
